Why do people always claim the Marines are the first ones in?
Please don't say "cause they are!"
Someone please give me times, dates, where Marines went in first, before the Army. I am not talking about specific battles, I mean wars, or invasions. some examples are
Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm, Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq (2003)
I want to know where people get their information from that Marines are first in combat.
I'll even give a pass on the whole Special Forces thing, I am talking about conventional forces here. Divisions, Brigades etc.
The Marines were first in during WWI. They were first in during WWII, the first offensive was Guadalcanal on Aug 7, 1942.
They weren't the first in during Korea. They did help the Army hold the Pusan perimeter long enough for the Marines to make the landing at Inchon and rescue the Pusan perimeter.
The Marines were the first in Vietnam.
The Marines were first in Lebanon.
The Marines were able to land forces in Grenada while the Army was crashing Blackhawks into each other. The Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Army Gen. Vessey, wanted to know why two companies of Marines were running rampant over the island while the Army had 3 regiments pinned down.
The Marines were the first to engage the enemy in the Gulf War.
The Marines were the first into Somalia.
The Marines were the first in when we invaded Iraq in 2003. One of the first actions, the night the invasion began, was a Marine CH-46 that went down with British troops aboard.
The Marines rarely assault with a division or even a brigade. They go in with a small number of troops and kick @ss.
The last assault by a Marine Division was WWII.
