I'm an Australian - how safe is it to back-pack in India. Racism issues.?
I've been advised not to go to India because, as an Australian, it would be too dangerous. I've been told Australians are singled out to rob & assault. How true is this?
I know a lot of Aussies that travel in India. There has been some attacks on Indian heritage people in Australia... it's been on the news in India... but as far as I'm aware people from Australia are not singled out exclusively. The issue is Western Tourist. It's not all Indian people. But there are a number of people who will see you as a Western Tourist and start to cash in or take advantage.
There are a number of Western Tourists who have "gone missing"... but these are usually folks that had a faulty plan of action, in my opinion.
A cyclist was getting money from a ATM outside of Mumbai, traveling alone, cross-country biking... he has not been seen since his stop at the automated bank teller.
There was a hang glider that went out with 2 other friends, he went off by himself without his friends, his body was never found.
A foreign woman, German I believe, left the Delhi Airport in the wee hours and was taken to a vacant lot and murdered... the taxi driver was given the death sentence for this... but she is gone.
There are travel do's and don'ts for India as a foreign traveler. Never go with a guide unless he has been highly recommended by other Western Travelers or friends you know. It's just not a good idea. Anyone can come off as a travel guide, hiking guide... some people have been held "hostage" (for cash) on house boats in Kashmir, until they pay up a certain amount of money... it happens.
Don't go traveling alone in remote places. Just don't do it. Better to join a group. But remember, lots of people are dishonest... it could be other scammer travelers that are responsible for these events! They may even be working in tandem with other locals.
As a Tourist you can be a justifiable target... some people do have a perception that they have nothing and you have everything... you can afford to loose a little because you have a way to get it again... some have never seen these "luxuries" or never have any hope of getting them.
Chain your luggage on train rides.
When getting a taxi from the airport get a taxi through the government taxi stand, get a receipt, keep the receipt until your destination, make sure the license number on your ticket matches the vehicle you get into.
Get a Lonely Planet guide. Lots of people travel with this guide, it's like a travel bible for many. The hotels are tested and tried, the information between destinations is good. Follow the basic travel information in the front of the book.
If you were going to any big city... New York, Los Angeles, etc. you could also get yourself into a world of trouble.... there are places you would not want to find yourself alone at night, it's just true. Be a smart traveler. Do some research. Be careful, but have fun. Without the proper research and actions, yes, you could get into some real situations.
