Packing for hike -- 3 weeks?
I'm going for a Teen Group multi-activity hike in the Grand Tuton mountains for 3 weeks.
We are going to be shifting gear around with a truck so weight and mass aren't really a problem.
My backpack is a 60 liter sized sturdy "sack", high quality for 300$ >:Z
My question is, how should I pack my bag?
-- I know that my sleeping bag, tent, and sleeping pad will be hanging/clipped on top of my pack, so exclude those.
-- Also I was told that I should pack my jacket and general light clothing at the bottom, with the heavy stuff on top, is that true?
thanks in advance for anwsering the question.
Heavy stuff goes in the bottom of the pack - keeps it closer to your center of gravity allowing you better balance, and it doesn't crush the gear below it in the pack.
Try to keep as much as you can inside the pack (not attached to the outside) to prevent loose swinging and allow damage to the gear. If you do attach items to the outside, use the compression straps to keep it tight without swinging.
Try to keep your sandals (for water crossing), your jacket/poncho & your packs rain cover in an outer pocket for easy access when the weather demands it. Also in an outer pocket should be your trail snacks and a light source if you're doing any night hikes.
I'm jealous, your trip sounds like a great time. And feel free to email me with any more questions.
