Can I used sand as bedding for hamsters?
I read the Roboskii hamsters are orginally from Gobi Desert in Mongolia. So I'm planning to use a base layer of the normal Carefresh bedding and top bedding of sand. Is it ok? I just want my hamsters to feel as much as its nature habitat as possible. I can only get beach sand though. Thanks.
Well yes you are right about them living in the Gobi Desert, but look at it this way, I have a Winter Whit Dwarf Russian hamster, and she's from Siberia originally. Do you think I would put her snow to make her ''feel'' at home? No. First of all putting sand complicates her breathing and can get in her eyes, therefore irritating her little eyes. Also even if it was okay to put sand, the beach has a bunch of yucky things in it. Like dried up poop and liquids like beer and soda. Plus, when you get it, you might have bugs stuck in the sand.
Please, unless you want your hammy to die, just stick to Carefresh and aspen. If you want her to ''feel'' at home, decorate the cage! Get clean brown rocks and put it in the cage and on one side of the cage, draw on a piece of paper a desert and hang it in the cage, but make sure it's out of your hamsters reach as if she grabs it, she might tear it to pieces to make bedding out of it! Hope this helped!
