Need advice with my sword?
My dad got my a katana for Christmas. It's 440 Stainless Steel and looks WAY too decorative to be full tang(battle ready is another term I guess). How can I tell if my sword is full tang? I know that means the blade goes all the way to the pommel but since it's all wrapped up in the hilt and I don't feel like taking it apart...how do I know?
Most Katana's that I've bought were "rat-tail" tang. The blade was screwed and bolted into the handle. These are only for cheap ones, ones that are $20-$60. You can tell it's rat tail tang if you take the pommel off. Under the pommel there should be what looks like the end of a screw in a securing nut.
Of course any rat tail tang Katana isn't real japanese steal. If it has a label that says "made in china" then it's probably rat tail tang.
And full tang swords won't wobble at all. If you move your sword from side to side you may feel a wobble.
Only way to know for sure is to take SOMETHING off...
