Just a cadet question. What should I have done?
Recently I was at an ROTC FTX and when I'm in the field I prefer to wear a boonie hat rather than my patrol cap. But I only started doing this when it was authorized by the Battalion Commander who not only said it was ok to wear in the field but actually encouraged us to go out and get our own. So, my problem, we get a new XO, a Captain, who sees me with my boonie hat and tells me to take it off. I told her that it was with the BC's approval that I was wearing one and that he encouraged that we get them for the field. She said, "she didn't care" and told me to take it off. Of course, I didn't want any problems, so i just took it off. Now, is that what I should have done. She's AG, so of course she wants to seem all big and bad when shes not at all. Could I have disregarded her order and simply told her to ask the battalion commander herself? What should I have done?
You would have been in the wrong to argue with her.
Even if she was telling you to take it off in error, it was a lawful order, and refusing to do so would have gotten you in trouble.
The right thing in this situation would have been to say "Yes, Ma'am," take it off, and then speak to your BC about it.
