What is the most effective way to ground hunt with a bow?
We have yet to get a tree stand, and are looking for the most effective way to get close enough for a shot at a deer?
The trick is to find where the deer are going to be, then set up on the trails leading to those areas.
Many people are now using pop-up blinds to hunt with. I love them and they work, but rarely use them.
In order to be effective you first need to be as scent free as possible. Use a product called Dead Down Wind (from Cabela's) and spray that on your clothes and gear. It is the only scent remover I have found that actually works.
Find a spot about 15 to 20 yards off the trail and clear several small shooting lanes through the brush and leaves. Make them large enough to shoot through, but make sure you don't remove too much vegetation. Cut one in front, one in back, and one on each side (angling toward the trail). The you will be able to shoot in all directions as well as see the deer coming a little easier.
Hunt when the wind is blowing in the direction opposite of where the deer should be coming from. Use the sun at your back whenever possible and leave food and drink (other than water) at home. Scent and movement are the two biggest reasons deer see hunters, so limit your movements. Having the sun at your back will help. There is a debate about camo use, but as long as you don't move, the deer shouldn't see you.
When picking a spot to set up consider the terrain. If you can sit just below a rise or ridge, the deer will not see your silhouette. If you have trees or brush at your back, you will break up your outline. And make sure whatever spot you pick, you will be comfortable sitting there for an extended period of time; in order to reduce movement on your part.
These are just a few of the things that will help. You are only limited by the terrain and your imagination.
