Why did my goldfish die so quick?
About 3 days ago i bought a goldfish. I asked the people at the petstore what fish i could keep in a fishbowl. He showed a bunch of goldfish. The bowl isnt small, 25cm/25cm or something around that. The petstore guy also gave me AquaSafe, i had to throw 2drops in the water before putting the fish in. I bought a small pack off these blue rocks/pebbles. And then goldfish flakes for coldwater fish(In other words fish food). LATER:When i got home i rinsed the rockes and threw about 1/2 of the bowl full of tapwater and added 2drops of the AquaSafe stuff. I put the rocks/pebbles in and then put the fish in with the water from the petshop that was in the plastic bag with him.
NEXT DAY:Yesterday he kept openig and closing his mouth as if he couldnt breath? DAY AFTER THAT:This morning he was dead. So what went wrong? Not the first time it has happened..
First off, I am sorry to hear about your fish.
Secondly, There is nothing wrong with using the fish store water added to your bowl. MOST fish stores run their water thru multipul UV Sterilizers (removes algae and parasites) for their tanks since they are interconnected. If you are not sure, ask, they will be happy to show you their set up.
Where did you buy your fish? (If it was from walmart, that explains it all) I have yet to have a fish from walmart survive more than a day or so.
Secondly, You cannot just dump your fish and water into your tank. They need to be floated. This is the process of taking the bag with the fish and placing it unopened in the tank or in your case the bowl. This allows for the water temperature to equal out. after around 15 min. open the bag and pour some of your tank water into the bag. About 1/2 cup or so. This will acclimate your fish to your tank/bowl. It allows the fish to become adjusted to the PH levels in your water. Most fish store fresh water fish are kept at a PH of 7. The PH in your tap water could have been as high as an 8 or if a water softener, Cistern water are very soft and could be as low as a 6. After about 10 more min. add another 1/2 of your water to the fish's water, remember keep the bag floating in your tank/bowl. Then one more time. Now you can release your fish into its new home.
This is the cause of most new fish deaths is the quick adjustment to a totally different PH.
Also, gold fish need lots of dissolved oxygen. This dissolved oxygen does not enter the water thru air stones, it can only enter the water by movement. i.e. filters, waves, fountains, waterfalls, etc.
Hope this helps.
again, I am sorry to hear about your fish.
