In cases where a firearm was used in the commission of a crime, how are..?
How are bullets and shell-casings used to identify shooters? Doesn't a firearm need to be recovered ( with fingerprints, of course ) in order to trace bullets and casings back to the gun? What is the purpose of a shell-catcher?
Tracing a weapon and identifying the shooter are two different things. When a bullet is fired, marks are imprinted into the round (bullet) as it leaves the barrel. When the round is found, they can use it and see if this weapon was used in any other crimes. These markings are unique, just like a fingerprints, and can be use to trace back to its original owner. However, weapons used in crimes are usually stolen weapons. If Officers can apprehend the shooter immediately, they can perform a powder residue test on the suspect and confirm that he or she recently fired a weapon.
