Would I REALLY get much of a benefit from upgrading my scope?
1) Am cheap
2) Inherited Old Winchester Model 70 .243 bolt action (Labeled Sears Model 53) with cheap 4x Bushnell scope.
3) Have few hunting skills. Hunt behind Los Angeles in the Angeles National Forest. Ranger friend locates fool proof spot for me every year.
4) Normally shoot deer at under 50 yards.
5) Everyone at range tells me I need to get 3X-9X Leupold or other good brand. Will make big difference.
6) For my style hunting, will actually make difference?
There's nothing wrong with a fixed 4x, or even 2 1/2x, for that matter. But you'll notice the difference with better glass in low-light conditions. If you're hunting in the middle of the day when the weather's nice, there's not much reason to upgrade. At dawn and dusk, and in the fog, something like the Leupold FX II 4x, or the VariX II 1 3/4-6x, would be notably better. You don't need more magnification, but that's only a part of the equation. I personally wouldn't put a 3-9x on it for your style of hunting, but even higher magnifications seem to be the rage these days. I can only surmise that young people can't see for crap.
