What Entry-level Savage Rifle is Better (in 308 cal): 10FP or the 12FV?
I'm looking for a ~$500 rifle, mostly to take to the range but also for deer hunting (I've never hunted before). I like the 308 because the ammo is widely available and inexpensive. Also, the round would allow me to try my hand at 500 - 1,000 yard ranges (with scope). My background has included training of up to 500 yards (prone, iron sights). For practicality sake, I would also like to be able to go hunting with the rifle.
Savage arms seem to be highly rated. For a somewhat newbie, I like the easily adjustable trigger pull that Savage markets (at 2 lbs, my camera requires more force).
I've also looked at the Remington 700 SPS Varmint, Tikka T3, etc. but the Savage seems to come with a free floating, heavy barrel.
Cost v. benefits / pro v. con of each? Also, any Remington fans, etc., are welcome to chime in.
Thanks in advance!
The 2 rifles you have listed as choices have similar features. The 10fp seems to be more of a tactical finish on it. I think that either one would be a good choice for your first rifle, but on a long hunt the heavy barrel may be a lot to lug around.
I also think the .308 is a good choice for either targets, or game. If you reload, I bet you can get the most accuracy out of your rifle.
