colt detective special or ruger sp101?
I've been looking at getting a short barrel revolver for awhile now, 2 or 3 inch. I had settled on the ruger sp101 3 inch, but now I have an opportunity to get a colt detective special that was very, very lightly used for quite cheap, exact price hasn't been negotiated yet. It is the newer version of the detective special with the shrouded ejector rod, and it has an add on part that covers the hammer. I would get either one in .38 special. .357 ability for the ruger isn't important to me because I would be shooting 99% .38 specials anyway. Based on the quality of the gun, which one would be the better purchase?
I have/had both. Gave the Ruger to the 2nd wife and kept the Colt.
Colt has not made the Det. Spl. since 1995, so "quite cheap" is anything under $450. The solid little Ruger is heavier than the Colt (25 oz. vs 21 oz.) and is a five shot to Colt's six shot. Both are surprisingly accurate guns. I give durability to Ruger, sometimes Colts can be a little sensitive. The Ruger will handle heavier loads than the Colt will. I consider the smaller Colt to be more concealable than the Ruger.
I am in the fortunate position of having a number of guns to pick from for my CCW. I find myself reluctant to carry the Colt simply because it does have value as a collectible. But I do carry it now and then. If I had to pick between the two, I would opt for the Colt over the Ruger. It is smaller, lighter, and has one more round than the Ruger.
I don't envy you the choice.
