Can the Dalai Lama be lying about who is really the 10th Panchen Lama?
The 10 th Panchen Lama is the successor to the Dalai Lama and an important link to the succession of the Tibetan Buddhist line with powers to rule over Tibet. The 10th Lama declared by Dalai Lama in 1989 has disappeared from the public eye and China has installed an 11th Panchen Lama since, a puppet, likely being groomed to rule Tibet upon Dalai Lama's demise. Can Buddha allow this? What if the 10th Lama identified by the Dalai Lama in 1989 is a decoy and the real 10th Panchen Lama is safe and sound elsewhere looked after by the Dalai Lama's most trusted men and protected by foreign intelligence and secret service agencies?
Very interesting. Generally speaking I'd agree with "The Dalai's" simple answer of "No, he doesn't lie." However, one can find in some of his writings an allowance for "little lie" or "kind lie" when it will cause less suffering. In this case the 10th Panchen Lama has suffered plenty, perhaps even lost his life. So I'm going to have to agree with "The Dalai" that the Dalai Lama did not mislead anyone when he identified the 10th Panchen Lama.
The puppet 11th is unlikely to rule Tibet after His Holiness dies. First of all, the Chinese have already got an iron fist wrapped around Tibet and show no interest in loosening their grip. He's a puppet and he'll remain one. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and governmental leader of Tibet, and the Tibetan Government In Exile is recognized by the international community as the legitimate government of occupied Tibet. The Panchen Lama has traditionally been instrumental in identifying the reborn Dalai Lama, so the Chinese play here would be to have the puppet 11th name a 15th Dalai Lama that the Chinese would control.
However, a further twist is that His Holiness has stated that he will not take rebirth in Tibet so long as China continues its occupation. This leaves a couple of interesting possibilities -- first, that he will take rebirth in India or the West, and second that he will not take rebirth until some time in the future. I attended his teachings in Madison, Wisconsin over the past few days, and he even joked about taking rebirth on another planet!
It will be interesting to see how this plays out, but I'm sure he'd want our focus on the "here and now" and restoring Tibetan autonomy in THIS lifetime if at all possible.
