Spiking power in the house 10 pts.?
My brother in law turned on his microwave (120V normally) and half the lights went dim and the others bright as hell. I read 200v on one power leg and 45v on the other power leg. The power would surge up and down when you turned the microwave on. I thought it was just the microwave but when I unplugged the frig the voltage went back to normal (120v on each leg). Again I turned on the microwave but the voltage fluctuated again spiking on one leg of power and dropping on the other. I don't know yet if they are on the same breaker because it was 10 at night and didn't have time to run through the breakers and check. What do you think the problem is? Bad neutral? Also I checked the power feed from the utility with the main breaker off and had the correct voltage so I don't think it is the utility. Any body had similar problem? 10 pts. for best place to start troubleshooting
this happens when there is an open neutral wire connection somewhere
