Do you get hearing damage no matter what when you go shooting even if you use hearing protection?
A shotgun blast and high caliber handgun measures up to 165 decibels and anything over 120 decibels can permanently damage your hearing. The best earplugs I can find have only a noise reduction rating of 33 decibels. If you wear ear plugs and ear muffs for protection at the same time it only adds 5 decibels reduction to the higher noise reducer of the two so would someones hearing diminish no matter what?
generally sharp short term sounds like gun shots don't do permanent damage until you are on the high side of 130db. It's continuous sounds at high levels(like in a mill) that do it at 110-120. As I understand it if you use plugs and muffs both rated for 25 db you get around 40-45db reduction if not the full 50.
I know several people that have fired many thousands of rounds from shotguns shooting trap. Plus all the other shooters on the line firing theirs so several thousand more gunshots in close proximity. These folks are 40 years or more in age and their hearing is as good or better then the average for folks their age and most of them have never shot with both plugs and muffs some even have a bit of shooting done in the past with no protection at all.
