I'm going to be skiing in the mountains for a few days and really cold - what kind of face mask should I get?
I'm going to be going on a ski trip way up in the mountains in January, and it's going to be REALLY cold. I'm considering getting a face mask for protection against the cold, and so I'm wondering what type you think I should get. Should I just get a ski mask? Should I get one of those neoprene half-face dealies? Or how about a simple bandanna mask? Thoughts?
Neoprene masks don't always fit the best, especially if you wear a helmet. I had one years ago and stopped using it sometime around 1992.
Fleece neck gaiters work well. I have several and generally keep two in my ski bag. If one gets really wet I swap out at lunch time. They are also pretty cheap.
Cotton bandannas make you look like a hoodlum and get wet quickly. Then they freeze, so all you have is a crusty snot rag hung around your neck....yeah, that's cool.
Scarfs are a pain. They always seem to get lost. I find more abandoned scarfs on the ski slope than I do lost gloves. Long scarfs also can get caught on the chairlift.
