What is the significance of different knife fighting stances?
I don't know if I worded the question correctly, but I was just wondering if the style knife fighters use have any meaning..or I don't know..
One style of holding the knife is basically "normally" or like a sword, where they use outward slash strikes.
The other I've seen is where the hold the knife like they are gunna stab, with the blade faced inwards so the outward part can be used to parry. But the one who uses this style seems to also fight like a boxer at the same time, he throws jabs with his left, then does a right hook and on the way back he slashes with the knife. Sometimes he'll even use the butt of the knife as weapon too.
The problem is the idea of the knife fight... The majority of people are not military, nor are they ever going to be in a position to use that sort of thing. The concept of going toe-to-toe with someone wielding a knife is ridiculous – a knife is a short range weapon, and most people have no concept of how to throw a knife. Escape the immediate range of the knife and you're safe.
Most knife fighters are going to take a defensive posture, using the less vulnerable back of the arm to defend. I don't know of a single well-trained fighter who is going to take a reverse grip with the blade against their forearm – it's an invitation to have your wrists slit.
As for postures, it's dependent upon who teaches it. My knife fighting will differ from ISDS who will differ from Sensei Scandal. Does it mean one of our methods is by default better? No. Each will have strengths and weaknesses that have to be used or overcome respectively at the moment.
There are only two guarantees in a knife fight:
1.) You will get cut.
2.) Your survival will be dependent upon you breaking range of the attack.
Watch ISDSs videos for a better look at how utterly stupid fighting someone with a knife is.
