what is a fixed blade knife?
i was talking to a police officer briefly about the legality of knives in california and he told me that it as to be in a sheath and visible and he also said that the knife cant have a fixed blade. so now im curios as to what a fixed blade is??? if you know please answer.. thanx
The police officer was wrong about the CA knife carry law, which is not that uncommon unfortunately. What you or he described is exactly for fixed blades. That gives you a good reason to review the penal code yourself ![]()
So, a fixed blade knife is any knife with non foldable blade, i.e. blade can't go into the handle.
As for the carry law, fixed blade has to be carried openly, on the waist, and that's about it. There is no length limitation.
Folding knives can be carried concealed e.g. in the pocket, and obviously it doesn't need a sheath.
PC 653K Defines legal and illegal pocket knives. In short switchblades and ballisongs are illegal. Conventional folders are ok, and there is no legal blade length limit on those either.
However, local laws might be more strict. E.g. San Francisco and LA have 3" maximum length on the folders.
Also, no knives in schools and public buildings.
