My adopted cat is very scared and shy, what do I do?
Hi, so I adopted this beautiful cat today and I am so glad I did. Basically when we were there at the Calgary Humane Society they did not let me adopt him at first because they said that he is very scared and they fear he could react violently towards us. His previous owner treated him very badly and that is why he is like this. Anyway I felt really bad for him and could not stand him being cooped up in those tiny cages waiting for another family, so I insisted and in the end we adopted the little fella. Moving on right now my sister who is three has been playing with him and feeding him and he has had no reaction, what I want to know is how long will it take before e stops being so scared? Every time I carry him he is very shaky and grips with his nails very tightly. He is constantly hiding under my bed and our chairs so I just want to make him happy could someone help me with this situation? Help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!

There's one thing to remember:
Don't force him to do anything.
If you get frustrated with him, and chase him, that's not any help at all.
sit down at a comfortable distance, and talk to him VERY lightly.
Phrases like:
Here kitty, kitty
Are good, I dont know why, but it works on my stray cat.
If he is eating, do not interrupt him.
Imagine if you were him, and you were scared of your new surroundings.
When you pet him, learn where his favorite 'spot' is.
My stray cat LOVES it if you scratch the sides of her head, and in between her ears.
Also, if you scratch at the base of their tail, the end of their body, it's like a massage, to them.
I hope this helps. Also, dont pick him up to much, if he dosen't like it.
Make him feel comfortable.
Warm greetings from me to your cat ♥
