What's the best way to ship my hunting rifle to my hunting location?
I am going hunting in WI and I live in PA. I am flying there and I just found out that United Airlines will charge me an extra $100 each way just for me to take my rifle since it is considered an over-sized bag because it's over 62 linear inches (length+width+height). It is a standardized double aluminum gun case and United offers no exceptions for hunting equipment. What I want to know is if it would be cheaper for me to overnight or 2-day ship this to my parents home in WI, or am I better off paying the $200 round trip and never fly United Airlines again? Please help if you have any experience with this. Thank You very much.... Shane
The LEGAL way for you personally to ship this gun anywhere is to mail it to yourself at your parents address using the United States Postal Service. This IS the way it is legally done. I mailed three guns in one case to myself from Juneau, Alaska to Tok, Alaska and the USPS knew exactly what I was doing and told me exactly how to do it. The option applies ONLY to long guns like rifles and shotguns, but NOT handguns. I suggest you go to your local post office and ask them for the rules regarding that. It is not a big deal at all. I was very pleased with the results. They charged me $33.00 for the postage. You might want to check with another airlines besides United. I have flown several places and took my guns with me. I have never been charged extra. Best of luck on this one. And good hunting.
