Brass is Tuff to color.
Most all metal coloration is some form of oxidation.
Steel/Iron is relatively easy to build depth of the oxide layer.
Brass tends to try to build up on the surface then thicken like a skin.
It wants to build "height" more than depth
The trick to get some depth and durability of the finish is to do it Slow, and in "thin" layers.
When Brass gives folks trouble,,the instinct is to put a stronger solution,,or pour it on thicker,,or leave it on longer.
Not uncommon for stuff to get immersed, and even left "soaking" overnite.
That's the OPPOSITE of what it needs.
LESS is Better.
Less Strength of solution,,Less Contact Time
Most all the solutions are water dilutable.
Thin them with distilled water.
Let the application sit a Minimum Time according to Label,,,or SHORTER.
Then repeat.
If it takes,,,3 applications to yield results of 1 app
done " according to directions" ,,Great!
Clean & Prep the work Thoroughly.
That means Strip it CLEAN ,,not just a dishwashing-type of clean
Scrub it,brush,,use alcohol or acetone risnse.
No Fingerprints, even.
Dilute your stuff,,,apply,,,rinse,repeat
Do it till you get the depth of color that you want
There's nothing I know of that you can wipe on>rinse off and blacken brass to what's a typically desired degree.
Even the Best stuff takes an effort,,,and some time.
Lots of people use Paint or Inks,or Laquer for those reasons.
Cuz its quick & simple.
Depends on your project I spose it "paint" is an option.
Some stuff it's just simply not desirable.
But at least its quick & simple,,and results are reliable
Good Luck
