i need a gun safe?
okay im not the richest person in the world so i dont have to much money (300$) but i have around 5000$ worth of fire arms and i need a gun safe cause if sum1 broke into my home id never be able to replace them now i have contacted my local police department and they said that most robberys in my area are get in get out (last bout 15 min) so i need a gun safe that will slow down a robber for at least 15 min it needs to be able to hold around 8-10 fire arms do u have any suggestions?
thanks guys i will check dickssportinggoods and walmart for them but id like to get a price range and know wats the best and i have some guns out for protection (sks and my dad has sum pistols hid around the house)
There are gun safes and there are the much cheaper gun cabinets.
The metal gun cabinets run between $99 and $300 for the larger ones. There are perfect for an apartment and small collection. They have a key lock and do not weigh near as much as a safe. They are no where near as secure as a safe, but, are much better than they typical wood gun case with a glass door. You can easily beef up the security of a gun cabinet by buying one larger than you need and isntalling sheet rock on the inside. This will quickly and cheaply add to the fire rating plus make it heavier and more secure. You can make your firearms more secure by running a bicylce lock though all of them so they can never be removed unless all hauled out in one tangle.
The Sentry safes are a better 'investment' with the welded seams. Again, you can buy a non-fire rated one and make it 2 hr fire rated by adding sheet rock on the inside, top, and bottom.
If you buy one of these - always get the largest one possible. This will also allow you to store other expensive items and important paperwork.
Take a good look at the dial. You want a dial with a key lock that prevents the combo from being manipulated. This is especially good in a family situation where one of you kids might learn our figure out the combo - by keeping the key on your key ring and the dial locked this can prevent a serious gun accident.
The most important part of a gun cabinet or safe is it needs to be securely bolted to the floor and wall. Most are rated at 2 hrs forcible entry when bolted, but, only 8-12 minutes unbolted.......... once a thief can get the safe on it's back they can leverage it open much quicker. Only great big lag bolts and RedHead fasteners or Hilti Gun fastners will do - don't add a few 2" #6 wood screws and call it good! It should be attached so well you can't get it off if you tried.
There are also gun owners who bought safes many years ago and have grown out of them............ if you advertise in the paper, put up notes in the local gun shop, etc etc eventually you will stumble across a really nice one at a rock bottom price. Better yet - the owner will usually make you a screaming deal if you help move their new and bigger safe into the house!! Ask around - someone will come out of the wood work ..
Hope this helps!
