What is this cartridge? I have never heard of it?
I have a sporting goods/camping/hunting catalog dated from 1907. I assume it is a nostalgia/reprint. In it, the catalog sells every manner of American Guns (by mail order, no less). Then here is an odd part of the catalog: it lists EVERY rifle and cartridge and pistol and cartridge on a chart. The chart shows penetration in 3/4 inch pinewood strips, and in loam (which I assume is dirt). For rifles, it shows the penetration in lead bullets, lead tipped bullets, and full metal "patched" bullets. It shows quite a few different varieties. For example .45-70 is listed as a Government model lead 500 grain bullet, and also as a 300 grain metal patched high velocity bullet.
The odd part is that the most powerful bullet listed is something called the ".405 Winchester," (never heard of it) cartridge chambered in the Winchester model 1895 rifle. Anyone familiar with this cartridge? Did anyone ever actually use it for anything?
It was Teddy Roosevelt's "lion medicine" and has had a minor resurgence recently. Africans, by the way, think it's an exceptionally poor pick for lions. John Taylor had some less-than-kind words about it in his writing.
