Gun Safe Art

well my friend has a tattoo gun and tattoos himself and friends. I consider myself to be a pretty descent artist, and my friend let me tattoo a small piece on him once and i really liked and felt comfortable with the feel of the tattoo gun.
He has offered to tattoo me, but i refuse because i don't feel its very sanitary if he uses his gun that he has used on countless other (which are tattoos he does from home)
I was wondering how santitary would it be if i bought my own personal tattoo gun that i would only use on myself or my friend would use on me. I live in a clean environment and would change needles every time. It also gives me a chance to practice the art of tattooing just as a personal hobby.
Would it be safe if i used this procedure?
