How much is this rifle worth?
Okay, I have been given a Imperial Japanese rifle that was taken from a battlefield during WWII and brought back to the States.
It is in excellent condition and even retains the Chrysanthemum on the rifle. This was stamped on during fabrication, but usually these symbols were ground off when the rifles ended up in American hands.
It also has an intact bayonet complete with a leather case/holster for it.
If there are any gun enthusiasts out there, do you have an idea what it might be worth?
I can get pics later...I will also check what "type" it is based on the Japanese characters stamped on as well.
The type of bayonet is called a "Hooked Quillon" according to http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/japanese_markings.html
and yes, it does appear to be a Japanese Arisaka Type 99 Rifle
It has a folding/sliding leaf sight which means it was made in in or before 1942 according to http://www.surplusrifle.com/arisaka/index.asp
Depending on the condition of the rifles and the bayonet it can go from around $225 Fair to $350 excellent on both, If you can find a collector. Mine is in only fair condition and the bayonet handle and leather has burned off one side. Rifle was recovered by EM2 Roulston about half a mile from ground Zero in Hiroshima 10 days after the bomb was dropped. PO Roulston was in charge of leading elements of first American Shore Party into the aftermath of the first Atomic Bomb used in war. I have been offered $250 even though weapon is not in good shape due to location recovered.
