I have a question about deer antlers more details provided below THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?
Im looking to shoot a buck this deer season however im not looking to spend 380 dollars on mounting him! If i just want to preserve the antlers is there anything that you must do once you have removed them from the deer? Also how do you remove them from the deer? Do you leave the skull plate on? And has anyone used one of the do it your self kits where you get the plaque and everything in the kit. Thanks for your help i really appreiate it!
on a none trophy animal, I often do just what you are suggesting. I use a bone saw ( a hack saw will work) I make a cut through the skull from about 2" behind the horns and cut straight thru exiting about 3" in front of the horns. You just have to be sure to start the cut far enough back to get the right angle to exit where you want. Then the hard part:(which isn't really hard) you need to remove all the hair, what little flesh there is, and the brain matter etc from the bone. I find that a small thin bladed knife works best for removing the hide, and scrubbing and washing the rest gets it clean. Then you need to let it sit in a protected area for a few days to a week. I place mine in the rafters of my garage where it is nice and warm, and no animals can get to them. This dries them out, and removes 99% of any odor. After that, I either buy one of the do it yourself mounting kits, or make one of my own. You can easily trim the remaining skull bone to the proper size to fit the kit if needed.
it's pretty easy really.
Good luck on your hunt.
