Can I use "weldable steel" for a knife blade?
I am wanting to play around with making custom knives and wanted to start out cheap. I saw some flat steel at Lowe's for pretty cheap, called "weldable steel" My main question is can I forge and temper this steel to make it stronger after I shaped the blade. The weldable steel is fairly flexable as it stands now. I cannot find much info about it on the net.
Thanks in advance
Nope sorry that steel will not work (been there done that)
It has a low carbon and low alloy content (tungsten, vanadium etc..)
making it unsuitable for knife blades because it will not harden to the
levels needed for strength and edge holding. That is what is called
mild or structural steel much like what is used in buildings. The
cheapest way to go is 5160 grade spring steel which can be found at most
any junk yard. Just try to find a leaf spring from an American made
car the older the model car the better. If you find one that is not a
usable part (ie: bent or broken) most likely they will give it to you for
free. Also I would highly recommend checking out this site it has some
pretty in depth how-to information:

Hope this helps.
