what is the best laser sight?
would an internal (laser max) laser be better than a grip laser (crimson trace) on an Springfield XD-40 ("4)? Also what is the best style laser in general?
A laser is useless on a handgun 99% of the time. The use of lasers on firearms was an idea to enable quick targeting in close quarters combat type areas. The firearms the lasers work well with are small sub machine guns(MP5's) and scatter guns where the time to take aim could prove fatal. Firing from the hip or swag type firing should be the only reason to have such a setup and unless your handgun can spray the whole clip when you pull the trigger then there is no point.
Handguns are ment to be fired in front of your line of sight. You should be able to point and hit in close quarters with no problem with a handgun. If light is and issue then by all means install a LED under the gun but a laser will only cause issues with keeping the sidearm secure and giving you the idea you have an advantage.
If you are going to get one, look for the most compact internal design you can. Crimson Trace has a good design that will work with most holsters. If I were to go that dirrection, it would be the CT design.
