Know anything about Whirlpool Ice Makers?
I have a Whirlpool side by side. The motor that drives the shaft to move the ice out of bin works fine, but the brass gear on the end of the shaft which connects to the back of the plastic ice bin just spins freely.
The nut on the shaft seems to be on very tight (left hand thread) but the brass gear (looks kind of like a paddle or propeller) still spins freely. I am starting to mark up the shaft (keeping it from turing) and the brass nut by trying to tighten down on it. The motor is good and the shaft is tight. It used to work fine a few days ago!
It is almost like there should be a plastic clip between the driver (brass blade, paddle, propeller, whatever you call it) and the nut that secures it to the shaft. Did something like this fall off? I can't get the nut any tighter and the blade still spins freely.
The blade or propeller thing that is spinning freely I think is called an auger if that helps anyone to help me!
The auger is in the unit that holds the ice.The unit on the back wall should have a key on the shaft to keep it from spinning.Take the nut off and check it.It may have a build-on key that is broken.
