Fan / Light combo wiring help?
I've installed a ceiling fan light combo per the following diagram http://www.selfhelpandmore.com/switch-outlet/fan-light-combo/fan-light-switched-separately-power-source-at-switch.php So I went to double check the switching and when i turn either switch on, both red and black wires at the fixture become hot? Is it becauase I have yet to install the fixture and my neutral (white) wire is not going anywhere?
Please clarify what you are using to test. Are you using an actual voltmeter? Are you just using one of the 'lightsticks' that indicate power? The 'lightsticks' can sometimes lie to you (especially on a 3 plus ground cable). This is especially true of the cheap ones sold at most of the hardware stores. Check the power with a voltmeter.
If you still have a problem, email me.
It does not matter that you have not yet installed the fan.
Please do not mount the fan to a standard electrical box. You must use a box listed as "acceptable for fan support" If your box does not have those words stamped, molded, or printed on it then it is not acceptable. There will be at least 3 to 4 warnings about this included with the fan. Please do not ignore them.
