Uncle wants to give me a SAA for Christmas from his collection, what do I take?
Long story short, rich uncle has been collecting colt saa's for 50 years at least. He wants to give me one for christmas. I like big bore handguns. Hes offered me 44 russian, 45 schofield, 45 colt and 44-40. He reloads his own ammo and has told me I dont have to worry about ammo, and hes going to teach me to reload ammo so I can load my own one day. So ammo isn't a concern. I asked a bucnh of questions yesterday about this here. I think 44 russian because everyone says its more accurate than the others. I also think 45 schofield because its supposed to be very accurate too. My uncle says all his guns are accurate lol so hes not helping. HELP!!!!
Well I would say the .45 Colt.
Read this before you make up your mind;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.45_Schofield
So you see you (sometimes!!) can shoot the .45 schofield in a .45 colt which gives you some versatility.
If he had a .44 special you could shoot the .44 Russian in it.
The 44-40 has more power than the 45 colt and was made for rifles of the time and later they made revolvers that used it.
For a balance of power and accuracy I like the 45 colt. The 45 schofield and the 44 Russian are less powerful than the 45 colt.
If you find the right load for the 45 colt that your revolver likes you will have accuracy.
30 years from now there will still be 45 colt brass made and possibly 44-40 but finding brass for the 44 russian or 45 schofield would be very difficult and expensive.
Brass wears out you can’t reload it forever so sooner or later you or your uncle will have to buy new brass. There is no way around that.
Last bit. The 45 colt makes a darn good defensive round and can be used for hunting some game animals. Its also used in cowboy action shooting and many other kinds of competition shooting..
I reload ammo for many of the older calibers and cast my own bullets and to be honest I like every one you listed but the 45 colt above them all for revolvers. If it was a rifle I would say the 44-40 but that’s another story.
