Should I shoot my unfired 30.30?
I have a 1894 Winchester 30.30 in the box, though a bit tattered. Bought new in 77' never been fired..Original Tag hanging on lever even with manual. But, it has some pitting on the bluing on the case from wet carpet when my uncles' wife had them cleaned one day. So since Winchester doesn't make guns anymore should I enjoy the weapon? Or keep it more for collecting? Any ideas?
As a Gunsmith & Firearms Appraiser, I suggest you take it out and enjoy it as a "Shooter" Your 94 isn't old enough to have any real collectors value despite USRA (Winchester ) being sold in 2006. Outside pitting won't have any effect on the function of the rifle, but it will only look bad cosmetically..Some #000 Steel Wool and light gun oil will remove the majority of surface rust, and as long as you keep the pitted area well oiled it should not rust further. If the pitting is bad you can of course have a Gunsmith re-blue the barrel and action. This costs $85-$120 on average for a Lever Action Rifle to be refinished.... Cold Blue "Touch Up" is only temporary and will not last nor will it fill in any pitting that remains. The choice is of course up to you..
NOTE* AS DJ already advised you , this rifle was manufactured to shoot modern smokeless ammunition and wasn't designed to shoot Black Powder ammunition...
