What type of Drum Heads are better suited for a Rock/Metal sound?
I have heard that nylon tiped sticks are better than wood tiped sticks (for a rock/metal style) because they provide a louder and more vibrant sound and attack opposed to wood tiped drum sticks that provide a warmer and more mellow sound and attack. Does the same thing apply to nylon drum heads. Such as nylon Contemporanea heads for example. Would these be best suited for a heavier sound for a rock/metal drummer or a lighter sound for a jazz drummer? This would also be a general question specifically sectioned off to a rock/metal sound... What would be the better head for this style of music? Brand suggestions and suggestions for specific heads would be much apprecieted.
Nylon versus wood tip really only sounds different when playing the surface of a cymbal, like a ride. They do not make the drums sound different. There aren't heads specifically for metal or any other type of music. Basically it just depends on the drummers taste. How they like to tune, how much resonance they like, etc. A lot of metal players like a less resonant head, so any 2 play head like the Remo Pinstripe will work for that. I like a lot of resonance so I use single ply Ambassadors. Just a matter of taste.
