when looking at scopes, what does mil dot mean?
I keep seeing it on scopes but what is it exactly and is it good?
basically mil dot is a tactical style recticle coming out on the newer scopes..instead of 2 normal crosshairs, the lines have dots on them. and basically the dots correspond to certain distances and windages.. so for example with my mil dot scope.. i have it sighted in at bullseye at 100 yards.. now lets say i want to shoot something that is at 600 yards.. instead of me having to manually adjust the turrets on my scope all i need to do is make my adjustment visually using the mildot. at 600 yards i aim the lowest mildot on the target. and the windage is up and down. each scope is different but to sum it all up, instead of adjusting your scope for windage and distance, all you need to do is look through the scope, do some quick math and use the dots as your refence points. hope this helps.
it requires lots of math calculations and can be difficult to sign in and get used to but all the best marine snipers use mildot scopes.
