What kind of watches are used most by the military?
im going to get a watch to send with my soldier on his deployment. what are the best features to get. Nylon band or metal? one with tritium or no? and the best brands. Is there anything that is required by the military?
The military requires your watches to be conservative and in good taste. To be safe I would recommend a black or dark gray band. There is huge variation in the type of watches used by soldiers, and I would recommend getting something that he would enjoy.
I personally have used Suunto, and Casio, and been happy with both. I always prefer a cloth band, because I have had problems with the plastic bands (except Suunto) breaking. Suunto is pretty expensive, but their large faces and clear displays make them very useful. The key is durability, even my very tough Suunto was ultimately destroyed by repeated scratching agains the metal surfaces of various vehicles.
Tritium is good, but I understand that that is only on dial watches. My preference is digital because they are difficult to misread, and offer a 24 hour function.
Other important considerations are size and complexity. If your soldier/marine/airman/sailor has large hands and wrist you can get a watch with a large face, if they are smaller try and get something a little smaller. If your soldier likes gadgets get a complex watch, otherwise get the most basic. The only things a soldier needs on his watch is a stopwatch function and a time function. Hope this helps.
If I had to make a recommendation I would recommend the Casio G Shock, one of the cheaper ones, because as I said it is likley to get destroyed over the course of a deployment.
