U.S. Canteen cook set, or SnowPeak Trek 900 cook set with Nalgene bottle?
I'm in a pickle. I need to know which cook set would be better. I am really interested into the Nalgene Oasis Canteen cook set, because all of the contents in the cook set are all in one pack, allowing me to drink the water from the canteen without taking it out of the pouch. I wanted to use the GrillTop canteen stove with a canteen cook set. I was also looking at the SnowPeak 900 Trek cook set, and it comes with a frying pan and a 900 ml pot. I cant fit my regular 32.oz nalgene in it though, but I could back all of my stove gear into it. But the beauty of the Molle Canteen kit is that I could strap it to my belt. Please tell me what you guys think, in your own opinion, what would be the best cook set out of these two
I like my Snow Peak 700ml cup. I can stick my stove head, a small iso-butane cartridge and a small pack towel inside, or a small alcohol stove (super-cat), priming pan, wind screen, towel, and 4oz bottle of alcohol in the winter, so the net size of the stove is essentially zero in my pack. I've never had any need for a little frying pan, the 700 is smaller and has a lid and that works for all my needs.
I've used a stainless steel bottle cup on a standard Nalgene bottle before, but then you still need to store your stove, windscreen and fuel in your pack, so it doesn't really save you anything, and the cup is hard to squeeze in to most water bottle pockets. The canteen cup does have a longer handle so there's less chance of getting burned.
I don't like losing my pants so I tend not to strap stuff to my belt. I made a pocket for my Nalgene bottle out the sleeve of a ruined Polartec jacket, with a velcro-closured pocket to hold my pocket knife and some water purification tabs, and a shoulder strap from some other broken piece of gear to carry it cross-body just at belt height and a velcro strap on the back to tie it into my belt so it doesn't bounce against me while I'm hiking. The nice thing is the Polartec keeps the water cool in the summer and prevents it from freezing in the winter.
