Scope for m1917 (P-17) Enfield rifle?
Hi, I found a scope mount for the enfield that supposedly does not damage the rifle here:
http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/productdetail.aspx?p=12461
Now, I am looking for Weaver Rings (that is what the mount says it needs) and a scope (on the in-expensive side) The only thing I will be doing with this scope is shooting targets at 100 yards (or 200 yards if I can find a range in my area that offers that. What is a simple but good scope for this? thanks!
Try browsing www.midwayusa.com and click the optics tab. You can browse all the scopes they have and find one you like. For 200 yd shooting you shouldn't need anything more than 12x. A 3 to 9 power, or a 4 to 12 power with a 40 to 50 mm objective. It will be written 4 - 12x40 or similar. For a good budget scope try Bushnell or Tasco. I spend a few extra dollars and get the target knobs for easier sight adjustments. If the scope doesn't have target knobs then Stony Point should make a set you can easily install on the scope.
There are many styles of Weaver style rings. Most of the budget scopes use 1 inch rings. If it's a permanent installation then I use Burris Signature Zee Rings. These use a plastic insert which will correct any misalignment of the rings and keep the scope straight. For a removable scope I'd use Leupold QRW Quick Release Rings which have a lever you can turn to loosen and tighten them In case you need to take it off. A medium height ring should be plenty high enough but that really depends on the height of the mount and size of the scope. Because it's on a P-17 you might need low rings because the rear sight is fairly high already.
