Neck size .223 Remington?
I have experience with reloading .223 for the AR15, but I just bought a bolt-action and need advice about neck sizing. Can I just use the full length dies and set then up a couple turns so it doesn't do the full length-or do I need the neck sizing dies? If so, which brand of dies would you choose?
Thanks, Dean
A regular set of dies backed off ½ turn from the normal setting will resize the neck and only part of the case. If the cases have not been fired in your gun, full length resize the first time.
Next time, open up the dies and after resizing, put the round in the chamber and see how hard the bolt is to close. Turn down 1/8 round at a time until the bolt snaps shut when close. That will give you 0 headspace and the cases will not stretch under full power loads.
I have used this method for years with my Marlin 336 and reloaded .35 Remington cases 15-20 times that all the experts said would separate the casehead at about the 5th time.
If you don't already have dies, I recommend Hornady Duro-chrome, because "they return the fired case to factory size, first time, every time."
