getting new rifle....?
I'v decided on getting a new deer rifle/ varmint/ target rifle. Iv come up on these two rifles, remington sps varmint .243win, or a marlin xs7 7mm-08, both will have the nikon buckmaster 3-9x-50 rifle scope with BDC ( bullet drop compisator) I really want the 7mm-08 because I know its really good on deer, and will be able to shoot better a competition with it, but i kinda want the 700 because of the heave 26'' barrel, and .243 will also work on deer, and varmints like fox, coyoote, ect... but also the 700 is 8.5 pounds, that wouldnt be good tring to drag around in the hills of tennessee and kentucky where I'll be going to hunt. so im a little stuck, remington 700- more accurate. 7mm-08, better on deer.
You are asking for a rifle to do three different things "deer rifle/ varmint/ target rifle". If you pick just one thing it will be much easier to make a choice The xs7 is a good deer rifle, too big for varmints, and not a target rifle.
The Rem 700 .243 attempts to be all three. That makes it heavy for a deer rifle, light for a varmint rifle, on the small end of deer cartridges, on the large end of varmint cartridges. It will work as a target rifle, but not in serious competition. It would be for informal matches only.
My suggestion would be to buy the 7mm-08 for deer. Save up for a heavy barrel .223 for varmints.
To be serious in competition is big bucks. If you want to be in competetion you should first research the type of events you want to shoot in and find out what equipment is needed.
