whats a good caliber for a long rifle?
I'm interested in purchasing a rifle. I'm looking at either the Remington 700 SPS varmit or the Savage 10 FP or Savage 111FXP3 package. I'd like to keep the cost low seeing as how i'd still need a scope and mounts/rings so the savage package looks appealing.
My question is which is a good caliber to buy? I plan to spend more time with it at the range than in the woods. Hunting would be more of a secondary purpose and targets a primary. When used for hunting, it would be for white tail deer.
I already own a couple pistols and shotguns as well as AR's and varmint rifles but am trying to own at least one from every category (revolvers/pistols/semi auto, shotguns, etc). What is good? 270? 308? 30-06? 7mm? 300 mag? 25-06? 243?
What are your opinions of the calibers you've used? Which would be a good way to go?
The 30-06 Springfield. This caliber can hunt anything from a prairie dog to a grizzly bear (though not the best choice for either of these animals, it would be adequate). The selection of available ammo, bullet designs and weights is second to none. The fact that you stated that you will be spending more time with the gun at the range, you may want to also consider the .308 Winchester about 90% of the 30-06's capabilities with a little less recoil. It actually is the same bullet size in a shorter case. The .270 is another good choice, but if you intend on hunting bears (you did not say that you did) you may be a bit under-gunned. If you are going to stick to deer and smaller game this would probably be your best choice. The 300 Win Mag is an excellent round for all species of bear hunting, probably a bit much for everything else. The 7mm Remington is another good round but you would be limiting yourself a bit in regards to ammo choices and availability. The .243 a very easy gun to shoot very little recoil relative to the other calibers that you had mentioned but you are limited to deer hunting and smaller game only and shot placement which is always important becomes even more important with this small caliber.
I am a big fan of Savage being a value-conscious consumer. They offer a lot for your money and our known for great accuracy when equipped with their AccuTrigger. I would go with their model 11G/111G or 11F/111F if you prefer a synthetic stock. I would buy a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope (excellent value about $150-$200) includes Rainguard anti-fog and water shielding coating, w/finger adjustable windage and elevation a big convenience when sighting-in. Install it with "B-Square" base and rings which are quite reasonably priced as well. You can probably be into the whole package for about $600-$650 all said and done, if you shop around. I have attached some links that may help you. I am not a big fan of the pre-package set-ups you know you will be getting a cheap scope and you will end up replacing it and it will ultimately cost you more money. I am not going to say that you have to spend as much on your scope as you did on your rifle like high end scope marketers will try to convince you, but a good scope (not a great one) is going to cost you about $150-$200. Good Luck!
