A few questions about the equipment of the US Military?
How many pounds of gear does a grunt go out on patrol with? How many rounds?
Do we have the best service rifle in the world? I am a hunter so I know something about cartridges, is the 5.56mm good enough?
I am trying to go to OCS next year, do you think playing college football (D3) will help with coping with stress, or are the two unrelated?
Thanks for the help
Depends on the mission.
The body armor alone weighs a lot. I don't know how much one weighs exactly, I've never weighed one, but the IBA (interceptor body armor) must've weighed at least 20-30 lbs. An M-16/M4 weighs roughly between 7-8 lbs. Then you're gonna be carrying ammo, 200 rounds at least on your person, canteen(s) of water/camelback, NVGs (if required for mission), kevlar helmet (5 lbs. I'm guessing), grenades, medical kit, MRE(s), LBV/E, a ruck sack with 30 lbs. of other gear....
Some of the infantry have been going out without their armor because they feel mobility gives them a better chance at survival than being weighed down by all that armor. Dunno. It's up to the individual, I guess. I wasn't 11B, so I don't know exactly how that works.
The platoon sergeant or whoever usually tells you what you'll be carrying into battle. Sometimes they go light, sometimes heavy. Depends on the mission and what they think will best help you during a mission.
Playing football will definitely help you with the physical part of being in the Army/Marines. There's a lot of running around, so having good strong leg muscles will definitely help.
The 5.56 mm isn't the greatest round in the world, but it's what we're using so you'll just have to deal with it. Unless you've been assigned a weapon that uses the 7.62 or .50 cal rounds.
