How to tan a raccoon pelt?
I've just skinned a raccoon, and I've never done anything with hides before. Doing some reading, I'm getting contradictory answers. Some say i should immediately salt the pelt, others say I should flesh it first and then dry/stretch it. I'm obviously running out of time now that it's skinned...have it in the freezer for now. I would like to make a wall hanging of just the fur. Oh, I case skinned it, but now that I think about it, should I "open" it up?
Roll it up in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer..............Now you have all the time in the world !!!
Dont salt that hide !........flesh it out wet...fresh...add water whatever....now stretch on a frame and dry after it has been fleshed and dryed hang it up in the garage..as long as it isnt moist out there it should be fine...except for rodents wanting to eat it.
either brain tan it or chrome tan with a kit from Tandy leather ..it's up to you........you have time to read up on this if you freeze it and toss in the freezer.
