Want to start reloading .308 with a Hornady L-N-L progressive press, what else will i need? what dies? etc?
I am going to purchase a Hornady Lock n Load progressive press without the automatic case feeder. But im not 100% sure which dies i will need, i will be loading .308winchester exclusively. I want to get the Powder Cop die to give me piece of mind that my charges are right (not double loaded etc), i checked cabelas and i cant find the micrometer insert for the powder measure, is it maybe included? and as for dies, i know i need a depriming/sizing die. i was thinking about the custom grade dimension 2 die set. is there maybe a die set i could purchase? any advice or links are much appreciated.
Thanks,
Oliver
D.L., you said That I don't need benchrest dies unless I shoot a high end custom. I shoot a rem 700 tuned by Clay Spencer, it still has a standard barrel but will soon recieved a high end custom.
You'll need a set of .308 Winchester dies, either form Hornady or another manufacturer. While I do like Lee, until the end of the year Hornady is offering a free box of bullets (less shipping) for each set of dies purchased. That off sets the price some what buying Hornady over Lee. Hornady's custom grade rifle die however are a 2 die set with the sizing die and seating die. You'll need a crimp die like included in the Lee Pacesetter set or sold separately, if you want true uniform performance cartridge to cartridge.
The micrometer die is not needed when loading rifle rounds. It isn't included, but the standard LNL Metering insert is included. If you feel you need one check Natchez Shooting Supply, Midway, or Graf & Sons. Don't forget you'll need a scale to insure the powder being thrown is the right amount.
You'll also need to get Shell Plate # 5 for the LNL AP press to reload .308 Win cartridges. This is what holds the cartridges on the press like a shell holder would on a single stage.
In addition to what I mentioned above, you'll need a way to lube your cases, either lube pad, spray lube or even using the stuff Lee sells in the tube you simple wipe on. For uniform reloading you'll need a way to trim the brass, as it does tend to stretch over time. Finally if you are really getting into reloading a lot you'll want a tumbler or vibratory case cleaner and some corn cob media to clean your cases before they can carry any dirt or gravel over to your dies and scratch them.
