Which pistol should I buy and why?
Springfield XD-9 or Taurus PT99
Yesterday I fired off handguns for the first time. First was a Glock 19, at 10 yards all 10 rounds went in the first 2 rings of the silhouette. The next 10 I was aiming for the head, none of them hit. All the shots grouped on the right shoulder for some reason, perhaps bad trigger control? Next I fired off my friend's Kimber Tactical Pro at 15 yards, all 9 were headshots. I was very proud of myself because this was my first time touching a real handgun. I felt 10x more accurate with the Kimber, possibly from its excellent trigger pull and light weight.
I want to buy an inexpensive ($500-600) 9mm pistol with a 5in barrel. I plan to do a lot of target shooting and that IDPA stuff looks very appealing to me. I don't care about how many safeties or indicators a gun has and don't plan on using it for home defense.
The XD-9 and PT99 seem to be my best options, which should I choose and why, or is there something better that I missed?
I have owned both of the guns you mentioned. I purchased the Taurus and was very unhappy. The trigger pull was horrible and the gun did not shoot comfortably. The gun was also very inaccurate. I felt like I was shooting a brick.
I actually traded the new Taurus for a used XD. The XD has a much better trigger pull and shoots like a dream. Also the barrel is significantly more accurate.
I also own a Kimber TLE II. If you are willing to splurge, this is the gun for you. It is the best shooting pistol I have ever seen.
Because of your price range,I would recommend the XD. The .45 version won "Handgun of the Year" from both American Rifleman magazine and the Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence. It is hard to argue with accolades from these two institutions. I also got mine for $450 used at a local Gander Mountain.
