Rem 870 Express question?
Hey guys, know a Lil about my stuff but i have an anomaly.
The cap screw that holds the barrel to the gun used to have an almost child safety lock on it that would "ratchet" to the locked position with an audible sound, but now i find my shotgun recoiling will loosen this cap and i have to re-tighten it every 20 rounds or so, is this a defect with the gun, i know it isn't normal as a Remington, but, should i buy a new cap cover or a whole new stock/cover package, or can i fix this - without using locktite as i clean it every major use?
aye biker it used to ratchet, i never noticed anything falling out but i know i heard it so least i'm not crazy - I have no idea if it was set in the cap or the mag, i would hope the cap as spare parts are scarce in canadistan
so we think a cheap new cap is the answer or do i need to order from Remington?
Remington utilizes two different variants in the magazine cap lock system. The first is with a ball and spring located on the ring on the barrel that attaches it to the magazine tube (barrel guide ring as Remington calls it). The cap has dimples all around the rim that cause a clicking sound as the cap is tightened or loosened. Check to make sure this ball is not missing from the guide ring, if it is, then use the links at the bottom of this page to purchase a new magazine cap detent and spring. If it is still in place, try using a small brass punch, plastic, or similar object to see if it is stuck. Use a small bit of oil or CLP to break it free so that it operates correctly. The second variant is a plastic magazine spring retainer that retains your spring in the magazine tube instead of that metal ring device. If you have this plastic piece, it may be worn out (the plastic teeth that engage the teeth on the inside of the magazine cap). I doubt that you have this device but it's worth looking into. Also, I've never heard of the detent and spring being inside the cap itself. It's always been on the barrel guide ring to my knowledge.
