22lr under mount for an AR-15?
hi,
for a high quality survival rifle i have been torn between an AR-15 and a ruger 10/22. then i had an idea. what if i used a full size AR-15 with an additional barrel and firing mechanism mounted on the rail?
something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M26_Modular_Accessory_Shotgun_System
i have searched the internet and i can not find something like this. does any one have any suggestions?
the point of this idea would be to allow me to use a larger more powerful cartridge when required, and a small light cheap cartridge when possible. i miss-spoke in the question, the 22lr action does not have to be semiauto. bolt action would work just fine.
I graduated from two military survival schools, teach survival now - and I work, hunt, fish and live in all sorts of remote places all across Alaska. I have 30+ years shooting and building AR-15's.
You are on the right track, but, just a bit derailed. An AR with a lower attached secondary co-witnessed firearm is going to be too heavy. When the boat capsizes, small plane crashes, or you get separated from your snowmachine, atv or campsite - a 10-14 pounds rifle is not going to be what you have strapped to yourself or close at hand.
Although I live and fish in brown bear country - I can deal with them - and stay out of their way without firing a shot. So - having a big bore is not essential.
I like my FN FiveSeveN pistol for survival - holds 20rds and weights exactly half what my XD does, but, it aint gonna drop a deer at 200yds.
Sooooo....... my 'solution' was to build an AR-15 with a 10.5" Daniel Defense 1:7 twist barrel - this is the smallest barrel you can install and still use all standard carbine parts. I paid the $200 tax and it took 70 days for the paperwork to clear. With a folding stock, it is just 25" long and weights about as much as big revolver. With my suppressor on it - it is just a 1/2" shorter than a regaular carbine. With the 22 conversion kit and Black Dog Machine 29rd mags - it is hell on wheels - especially suppressed!
I put on the $59 TruGlow reflex sight and a Yankee Hill flip up front sight tower and BUIS rear sight for back up.
This rifle, conversion kit, and suppressor fits in a standard pistol case. Or you can put it in a Pelcan case that will still float with a couple of mags.
With normal 62gr milspec green tip ammo - it can still toss them at 2200fps - plenty fast to drop a deer at 200yds and it is very accurate with the suppressor on. The 1:7 barrel means I can toss 80-90 heavy match bullets, and, the 100gr Extreme Shock subsonic rounds. This gives full 223 Rem power and all you hear is the tinkle of brass ejecting.
With the 22 conversion kit and a suppressor - any AR sounds like a pencil falling on a rug - the conversion kits are very quiet as they cycle. You do get a tiny tinkle if the brass falls to cement.
My next trick - is to modify the stock so the 22 conversion BCG fits/hides into it. This way I have one less part to loose.
With the short barrel - this is a gun you can easily keep handy and carry anywhere. I demonstrated it to my local police - and they were shocked how easy it is to get in and out of a car with it. So would getting into a canoe or exiting from a flipped over sinking float plane.
