i recently busted my butt and got a new ruger 10/22 target model so i took my nice leupold off my old one and put it on the new one. now my old one i want to leave with open sights but i dont like them much so i was thinking to keep it a good "run and gun" gun would the red dot above get the job done?
oh and will it mount to a basic 10/22 scope rail?
It needs a weaver type 10/22 scope rail. My 10/22 was new in the 1980's and came with the older dovetail 'tip-off' bar If your bar has 5 grooves in it, like this one, then it will work fine

Now, as far as the red dot, STAY AWAY FROM BSA THEY ARE JUNK
I was told this and told this and did not listen. I got a very similar BSA red dot, but have the settings the dot wouldn't light up for. I figured 'no big deal' and went to the range with it. I shot once and the thing shut off. I whacked it and it came back online. It would stay on for a bit then cut out. Sometimes whacking it would work, sometimes I'd have to change settings AND whack it, and sometimes I had to put downward pressure on the cap, and sometimes all of that wouldn't work.
I foolishly thought 'well maybe it is because I am using the battery that came with it and maybe the battery was really weak'
so I bought a new battery.
It was NOT a battery issue.
I threw it away and got a "Truglo" red dot, and have shot the hell out of it with nothing but good results.

BUT.... that seems wasted on a 'target' model. To me the 'target' model calls for a powerful scope, otherwise you should have gotten the regular type.
If I was going to redo my purchase, I'd get the 2x magnification red dot

For you, for a budget scope I'd recommend the...Trueglo 4X scope

but really, for that gun you should get something that has at least 7X power and a bit of quality. Two good midpriced scopes I would recommend would be

Remember, stay away from BSA scopes too.
