Can anyone tell me about the laws involved in the ownership of a .177 spring piston air rifle?
My friend is offering to give me an air rifle. I love target shooting, so I plan to take him up on that. However, I want to know what laws I need to know about. Firstly, it is two months until my eighteenth birthday - do I need to wait before I can use it? Also, how exactly am I allowed to carry it around? I do not have a car, but I know of a place in the countryside that I could take it via train. Is it all right to do this provided I take it in a covered case? Is there anything else I should know?
It is this kind of rifle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Springpiston.jpg
I live in the UK by the way.
The age limit is 17 and not 18, so no problems there; UNLESS the rifle is sufficiently powerful to be classed as a section 1 firearm. These are not common, and it is highly unlikely you would be given one for free as they are very expensive. The energy output has to exceed 12 ft/lbs
If you are transporting it, use a cover and don't ever take it out of the cover unless putting it back at home, or using it at your target location. Remember, you cannot possess an air weapon in a public place without lawful authority or reasonable excuse (proof of which you must have with you; e.g. Letter from landowner giving permission)
Dont discharge it within 50 feet of the centre of a highway or in a public place. You cannot simply go to somewhere in the country and start shooting. You will need to be on private land, with the permission of the landowner.
Be sensible, and you'll be fine. I've attached a nice precis by Cheshire Police.
Beware the link above to http://f4bscale.worldonline.co.uk/gunlaw.htm It is out of date and legislation has changed
