What are the main differences between the AR-15 A3 and A4 rifles?
I understand that they both provide the shooter the option of removing the carry handle, and that the A2 has the fixed carry handle. However, is the A4 essentially the same as an A3 with an M4 configuration? I understand that the M4 configuration has the cutout in the barrel for a grenade launcher, with possibly a more reliable feed ramp. Thanks.
The A3 and A4 designation is muddled when it comes to AR's.
For example: Bushmaster currently markets their flattop rifle as an A3 whether it has a carry handle rear sight, or not. Other brands may call their flattop rifle an A4 with the rear sight attached.
The M4 is exactly what you said: A carbine with grenade launcher cutout, and an improved feed ramp.
Looks like current military hardware...It can have a fixed rear sight or flattop.
Commercial designations for AR's are somewhat confused, and what goes for one brand may not exactly be so for another.
