What's the difference between a rifle and a shotgun?
Hello all. I was just wondering what the difference is between a rifle and a shotgun. When I hear shotgun I think of a 12 gauge double barrel and when I hear rifle I think of a single barrel gun where you have a magazine. Am I right about these differences? Are there any other differences? Thanks.
Rifle's fire single projectiles (aka bullets)

whereas shotguns fire shot

Hopefully those diagrams explain the differences pretty well.
There are several other differences between the guns, but this is due to the differences in ammunition. For example, a rifle will have a rifled barrel (the inside of the barrel is twisted)

This spins the bullet, which helps to stabilise it during flight, and compensates for the bullet having it's centre of pressure in front of it's centre of mass (other projectiles, like arrows, have fins at the back to move their centre of pressure behind their centre of gravity, thus keeping them stable in flight) Shotguns on the other hand have smooth barrels, as accuracy is not so important when the shot will spread (it's like firing a hose at someone). It is worth mentioning that some guns can fire both shotgun shells and bullets (e.g. Taurus Judge). These guns have only very shallow rifling.
Sporting shotguns tend only to have a front sight, whereas rifles and combat shotguns tend to have a forward and rear sight.
Hope this helps
